Artifact: Diversity Blog
Reflection:
During the spring of 2015, it was asked of us to blog about various assigned topics for the ITEC 7430- Internet Tools in the Classroom course. This artifact is a blog I posted in March 2015 to my Weebly portfolio for the KSU ITEC program regarding diversity and global awareness. In the blog I discussed being culturally and globally aware of others, using digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness within the classroom. My contribution for this artifact was the research behind the concepts of global awareness and diversity, the composition of the post, and the publishing to my public blog on Weebly.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of my skills modeling and facilitating the use of digital tools and resources, such as my district learning management system (LMS), to support diverse student needs by creating digital content that is accessible to the students at their own pace. In the blog I also discuss the way I model and facilitate differentiation by using the LMS to create alternate assignments for students based on their diverse needs. Enhancing cultural understanding is modeled by my discussion in the blog on facilitating an experience where students interacting with others from different biomes as a part of a science unit in my classroom. By communicating with others from different cultures, the students are able to get an enhanced understanding of what it would be like to live somewhere else or be a part of a different culture. Lastly, I convey the idea of being globally aware in my blog post. Many of my students have location isolation, and I discuss the importance of increasing global awareness by using social media and blogs to make students aware of how digital content found on the Internet can be viewed and commented on by people from all over the globe.
In the completion of this artifact I learned about the importance of taking the time to help students become globally and culturally aware. While many of my students have never been outside of a 30 mile radius of our city, they can interact virtually on the Internet through a variety of means. This interactions will help to deepen their understanding of other cultures and hopefully make them a better-rounded individual as they encounter diverse people and situations in their futures. If I were to improve this artifact, I would include a section on having my students reflect on what it means to be a diverse learner and include some of their thoughts in my writing. I would also like to make this post more public and use it as a way to show my students how many people viewed or commented on the post.
The completion of this artifact impacted student learning as I discussed the ways in which I have and will in the future, use digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness. The impact made can be assessed directly through student blogs about the topic and conversations with them about how they think their individual diverse needs have been met, or can be met, using the Internet and other digital tools available to them.
